Many Thanks to Many Volunteers in Our Schools!
National Volunteer Week has been celebrated the third week of April each
year since
1974. This year it is officially celebrated April 15 - 21, and the theme is
“Celebrating People in Action.” The Points of Light Institute is the official organization that sponsors National Volunteer Week. The week has been endorsed and supported by Presidents, governors, and mayors each year. According to the Points of Light Institute, “National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing, and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating that by working together, in unison, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.” In our school district, we have well over 3,000 community members who volunteer in our schools. These volunteers help out in a multitude of ways, from reading to our youngest students who are just learning to read, to tutoring or mentoring students one-on-one, to chaperoning field trips, to assisting in the school offices with special projects, to organizing fundraising activities, to running PTO’s, to teaching students about careers, and many, many other activities. The assistance provided by all of these volunteers is invaluable. They are things that wouldn’t or couldn’t be done in our schools if they were not providing these volunteer services. Aesop once said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” We would like to thank the over 3,000 volunteers who perform acts of kindness every day in our schools. Their caring attitude and the service they provide are greatly appreciated.
